Loc Journey Update #1 + DIY Itch Moisturizer

Brown Girls Brother

This is our first loc journey update for Brown Girls Brother's hair. He got his twists for locs on May 31, 2013. You can view it here.

From May 31-June 22nd, he did not allow any water to touch his hair because he didn't want his twist to come a loose. He wanted to make sure his hair locked before he allowed water to touch it. He wore a shower cap while in the shower and he slept with a do rag each night to keep his twist neat and in place.

Do Rag

On June 22, 2013, four weeks later, he did a hot rinse.
What is a hot rinse? While in the shower, he put the water on as hot as he could stand it, then he rinsed his scalp.

After he hot rinsed his hair, I sprayed it with the homemade Itch Free Spray below.

DIY-Itch Free Moisturizer Concoction

Items You Need:

2 oz. Sea Breeze
1 oz. Witch Hazel
1 oz. Fixed oil of your choice: Castor oil,Coconut oil, Grapeseed oil, Olive oil etc.
5 to 6 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil
Spray Bottle

Directions:  First add the tea tree oil to the castor oil and mix. Then add the castor oil and the other ingredients to the spray bottle and shake. Spray to scalp for a cool, fresh, itch free, moisturized feeling!

Side Note: Tea Tree Essential oil is great for dandruff, deodorizing, and acne prone skin.

Then I used Taliah Waajid's Tight hold lock it up to refresh his damp twists.

I will be posting a review on this soon!

I applied the tight hold to each damp twist being sure to add his new growth to the twist so that it can lock.

Then I clamped each twist at the root.
Hair Clamps

I applied spray, as needed, to twist that may have dried during the process. Don't add too much spray because you don't the twist to become loose.

After I finished, he sat under the dryer for about 15 minutes. We will repeat this process every few weeks. The next time, he will wash his scalp if we think the locks are set.

Are you or Do you know anybody with starter twist going through the loc journey?

Natural Spider Cornrows

cornrows, braids for girls, natural hair styles, black girls hair, african american hair care
Brown Girls Hair

It was not my intent for this hairstyle to look like a spider because we don't like spiders. That's what it looked like to me when i finished so I called it "Spider Cornrows"!

Thumbs up the video if you would like me to make a tutorial of it. Otherwise, I'll move on to the next one!

How to Make Accessory Holder {Easy}

This fun project will take less than a minute to do. No kidding!

Here are the items you will need:

Oatmeal Container

Pringles Can

Printed Duck Tape

Krylon Glitter Blast

In Bloom flat beads

Now that you have everything that you need, let's get started!

  1. Open your tape (no brainer right? LOL).
  2. Start at the bottom of the container. Align the tape up with the bottom of the container.
  3. Keep going around the container with the tape until you get to the top. Make sure you don't leave any gaps or areas untapped. Try to keep the tape even as you go around the container and keep the tape flat to prevent bubbles. It's ok to overlap the tape.
  4. When you get to the top, if you have any tape left over the cans opening, fold it into the can all the way around. Whoa La... you're done.
  5. For added spritz, you can spray paint both sides of the plastic top with Krylon Glitter Blast or you can add the flat beads to the top with glue!

The pringles container can also be used as a bracelet holder. The options are endless!

with the bling bling!

Hair Bow Organization

Brown Girl loves hair bows! Although I haven't used any in our youtube videos, she selects one everyday to wear to school with her outfit that she is proud to say she picks all by herself each night for school the next day.

She is truly already a fashion diva. I almost don't want to shop with her because she is sooo opinionated about what she wants and doesn't want. I'll save that story for another post.

The post today is to show you how we organize her huge hair bow collection!

She currently has 2 doll heads(here)

2 tutu dress hangers(here)

and a ribbon string holder

I also used an oatmeal container, pringles can, and some hello kitty duck tape(to match her room) to keep her ponytail holders in.

You can see how I made them here.

How do you organize your daughter's hair accessories?
