My "MUST HAVES" Natural Hair Survival Kit!

Happy Thursday Brown Girls!

Conditioning with TRESemme'

I had one of our lovely Moms, who follows our channel, to send me a note today on Google+. Here's a small excerpt of her issue:

I am currently raising an 8 year old granddaughter and am not very hair savvy and with so many products to choose from and such a tight budget as I currently have, it has been very challenging trying to find the right techniques and products. Thanks to you and a few others who make little girl hair care vids, I have finally gotten her hair and scalp a little healthier, (scalp used to be extremely dry). Now I am working on her hair texture. Having difficulty keeping the moisture in. But I was amazed when I washed it this past weekend at how "thick it has gotten! Please continue doing your videos because I am so very tempted to get this child a perm!....lol! But every time I look at your vids, I am encouraged, it is just difficult when you can't really afford the products, at least I am not out just spending willy-nilly and finding out that things that I spent a mint on don't work for her. Today I was looking at the As I am and the Shea moisture lines. I am still confused about these curly pudding and curl meringue products. I am always thinking these manufacturers are just trying to get you by making the product sound like yummy foods. If you have any suggestions of what main items I should get, I appreciate it.

I responded to her, but I also told her that I would put more information in a blog post. So here it is!

These are my suggestions of MUST HAVE PRODUCTS for girls with THICK COURSE NATURAL HAIR. Because this is the type of hair that my daughter has, I am going to share with you the products that I can't live without. Let me repeat, These are the products THAT I can't live without.

With that being said, I know that my list will not work for everyone, but I am sharing the must haves that work best for US on our journey :)!

Please READ the paragraph below FIRST!

**I am NOT including any high end product on this list which means that this list does not contain ALL of the products that we NEED, it just contains the products that I would want if we were stranded on an island somewhere. This list only includes inexpensive products that I keep on hand at all times. When my money is funny, I can survive with these items! LOL**

Hair Products

1. TRESemme' Conditioner- makes detangling a breeze period!
2. Just for Me Moisturizer- when all else fails, this always works for us! Clears up her dry hair with the quickness!

Hair Supplies

1. Wide Tooth Comb- it's impossible to detangle her hair without one!
2. Rat Tail Comb- to make straight parts.

That's really it! You notice I don't have a bunch of hair products on my list. Why? because it really doesn't take all of that to survive. Sometimes the basics are enough.

What are the MUST have items for your daughters hair?

My Top 5 Favorite Inexpensive & Expensive Product Lines

The following are lists of MY favorite inexpensive and expensive product lines. I am listing them in order of the ones I like best. The best are listed first.

My Top 5 Inexpensive Product Lines

  1. TRESemme- I like using their shampoo and especially the conditioner on both my daughter and my hair. It's the best cheap conditioner around. Read more here. The conditioner has more slippage than Suave and leaves our hair soft. You also get more bang (product) for your buck.
  2. Suave- I also like Suave's shampoo and conditioner on both of our heads, but TRESemme is much better to me.
  3. Smooth N Shine- I use the Curled Up Mousse for my wash and go's when I'm out of the Kimble Curl Revitalizer listed below. I also use the Instant Repair Spray on Polisher when I flat iron my hair.
  4. Garnier Fructis- This is one of the first non-child product lines that I used on my daughters hair. It worked great, especially the conditioner. I don't even recall why I stopped using it.
  5. Just For Me (moisturizing lotion)- This was the first moisturizing lotion that I found to work on my daughters hair when she was 3 years old to give it the shine and moisture that I was looking for at the time....AND the price tag was perfect. I used this to replace using the expensive hair milk by Carol's Daughter below. I haven't tried the other products in this line as of yet. Click here to watch me use it.

Over The Years

My Top 5 Expensive Product Lines

  1. As I Am Naturally-This is my newest found love!! I absolutely love the co-wash in both of our hair. It gives my hair so much body like I had in my perm days! The leave in is awesome. The twist defining cream works well and the smoothing gel is good on both of our heads. I'm looking forward to trying the other products on our hair. I love it so far.
  2. Kimble Beauty- I have not used this product line on my daughters hair, but my hair LOVES it! My favorite product in this line is the Curl Revitalizer. I use it in the summer for my wash and go's. It keeps my hair moist and shiny while providing a light hold to my curl pattern with no flakes! I purchase mine at Target.
  3. Bee Mine Products- I've used several of their products you can read my review here. You can watch me use the moisturizer here. I didn't repurchase the moisturizer because it made her hair soft, but it didn't moisturize it.
  4. Carol's Daughter-My favorite product in this line was the hair milk. It is the very first product that I found (when my daughter was 2 years old) that work to help me be able to comb through my daughters thick course hair. I remember like yesterday how excited I was the very first time that I used it on her hair. Priceless! I stopped using it because it was too expensive.
  5. Cara B Naturally- This is a really good product line for babies and toddlers because it is all natural, tear free, and was created with them in mind. We did a review on this product line here. It worked well on my daughters hair and she loved it because it didn't burn her eyes lol! I used this line to do this twist out!
This is my opinion of the products that work best for my daughter and I. Your list may be different and that's fine. Different products work for different heads, especially dealing with natural hair.

**If a product is not on the list, it's because #1- I haven't tried it or #2-It didn't work for us.

Do you use any of the products on our lists? Are any of them your favorites too?

Roots Only Comb Applicator Bottle Review

Roots Only Bottle

I purchased my roots only bottle at a local Sally's store for $6.99.

The Roots Only comb applicator bottle claims to offer the following benefits:
*evenly distributes solutions so you use less
*no parting or sectioning required
*apply evenly in hard to reach areas

These are the instructions for how to use the bottle:

Scalp conditioning easy as 1,2,3!
1 Add desired amount of oil/conditioner to roots only applicator bottle
2 Comb and squeeze to condition scalp and roots
3 style and go for gorgeous hair

Hair color
1 mix solution and apply by combing to scalp and new growth
2 process and rinse per manufacturer's instructions
3 style and go for gorgeous hair

PRODUCT REVIEW

Did the bottle evenly distribute the oil so that less oil was used?

Yes!! The bottle evenly distributed the oil causing me to use less and it really works!!

Was parting and sectioning required?

No. I did not have to part or section her hair to comb through it with the bottle. Before using the bottle, I took my daughters hair down, combed through it, and let it hang. Then, I used the bottle to comb the oil through with no problem at all.

Roots Only Bottle

Did the oil apply evenly in hard to reach areas?

Because I'm not using the bottle on my hair, there are no hard to reach areas. The oil did apply evenly to my daughters hair.

My thoughts......

I really like using this bottle and will continue to use it to oil my daughters hair. It works wonderfully!!
I like that the bottle has the measurements on it because I can see how much oil I am using each time. The bottle holds up to 4oz of oil.

I will also purchase another bottle and use it to distribute leave-in conditioner in my daughters hair on wash day!!

If I ever decide to be bold and add highlights to my hair, I will use this bottle to do it!! I do recommend this product, especially to those who have a lot of hair to oil. It's truly a life saver!!
