Brown Girl with her Dad! |
Last night I was lying in bed resting and my husband was on the computer next to me. Our daughter, who is 8 years old, came in the room and politely asked "Daddy, What is a pimp?"
Some of you would probably be alarmed if your child asked you this, not us. Probably because we have already raised 3 boys who are pretty much grown (16, 19, and 22), so nothing really surprises us anymore. Besides, our daughter is way beyond her years and I think having much older siblings has a lot to do with it.
Our approach to raising our children has always been, Knowledge is Power! We want our children to be informed about things that could possibly destroy them even at a early age. The way our parents raised us ("What they don't know won't hurt them" or "Because I told you so") mentality would not work in this day and time because information (good and bad) is at the click of a mouse, or the touch of a smartphone, or on the tv screen.
Our parents and Grandparents were right about one part of it, What they don't know won't hurt them, I would like to add that
IT WILL KILL them!
If you don't tell your kids, there friends sure will. And keep in mind, the things you may shield your children from at home, when they go to school, they'll interact with other kids who's parents don't care! There friends nor the computer is where you want your child being educated...at least I hope it's not.

The dictionary says it too kindly. |
Anyway, her Dad looked at me and went on to answer her question, "A pimp is a man who tries to make you do bad things with your body for money. He's approach is usually as a nice guy then he turns to a very mean person." Then he went on to remind her again(we've already had this talk with her before) of the things she should never let anyone do to her and reminded her to always tell if anyone ever tries to do anything to hurt her or touch her inappropriately. He reassured her that he is here to protect her.
She understood and glady went back to playing. I think it is very important for us to communicate with our children on their level so that they are aware and know what's right and wrong even for an adult to do to or with them. They should know that there are limits that anyone should have when it comes to their bodies and personal space.
With all the
child trafficking and craziness going on today, we have to do everything that we can to protect and educate our children.
What do you think?
