My Top 5 Favorite Inexpensive & Expensive Product Lines

The following are lists of MY favorite inexpensive and expensive product lines. I am listing them in order of the ones I like best. The best are listed first.

My Top 5 Inexpensive Product Lines

  1. TRESemme- I like using their shampoo and especially the conditioner on both my daughter and my hair. It's the best cheap conditioner around. Read more here. The conditioner has more slippage than Suave and leaves our hair soft. You also get more bang (product) for your buck.
  2. Suave- I also like Suave's shampoo and conditioner on both of our heads, but TRESemme is much better to me.
  3. Smooth N Shine- I use the Curled Up Mousse for my wash and go's when I'm out of the Kimble Curl Revitalizer listed below. I also use the Instant Repair Spray on Polisher when I flat iron my hair.
  4. Garnier Fructis- This is one of the first non-child product lines that I used on my daughters hair. It worked great, especially the conditioner. I don't even recall why I stopped using it.
  5. Just For Me (moisturizing lotion)- This was the first moisturizing lotion that I found to work on my daughters hair when she was 3 years old to give it the shine and moisture that I was looking for at the time....AND the price tag was perfect. I used this to replace using the expensive hair milk by Carol's Daughter below. I haven't tried the other products in this line as of yet. Click here to watch me use it.

Over The Years

My Top 5 Expensive Product Lines

  1. As I Am Naturally-This is my newest found love!! I absolutely love the co-wash in both of our hair. It gives my hair so much body like I had in my perm days! The leave in is awesome. The twist defining cream works well and the smoothing gel is good on both of our heads. I'm looking forward to trying the other products on our hair. I love it so far.
  2. Kimble Beauty- I have not used this product line on my daughters hair, but my hair LOVES it! My favorite product in this line is the Curl Revitalizer. I use it in the summer for my wash and go's. It keeps my hair moist and shiny while providing a light hold to my curl pattern with no flakes! I purchase mine at Target.
  3. Bee Mine Products- I've used several of their products you can read my review here. You can watch me use the moisturizer here. I didn't repurchase the moisturizer because it made her hair soft, but it didn't moisturize it.
  4. Carol's Daughter-My favorite product in this line was the hair milk. It is the very first product that I found (when my daughter was 2 years old) that work to help me be able to comb through my daughters thick course hair. I remember like yesterday how excited I was the very first time that I used it on her hair. Priceless! I stopped using it because it was too expensive.
  5. Cara B Naturally- This is a really good product line for babies and toddlers because it is all natural, tear free, and was created with them in mind. We did a review on this product line here. It worked well on my daughters hair and she loved it because it didn't burn her eyes lol! I used this line to do this twist out!
This is my opinion of the products that work best for my daughter and I. Your list may be different and that's fine. Different products work for different heads, especially dealing with natural hair.

**If a product is not on the list, it's because #1- I haven't tried it or #2-It didn't work for us.

Do you use any of the products on our lists? Are any of them your favorites too?

Natural Baby Hair Care

baby hair care, natural toddlers hair, natural hair
Brown Girl with Dad

Lately, I've had a lot of people asking me about hair care for their baby. It's such a joy and a blessing to give birth to a beautiful healthy baby! There is so much to celebrate, yet so much to do. Giving birth is over now it's time for the real work, being a Mom!

If you are a first time Mom, you are happy but now that the baby is here, you may have tons of questions on what to do? You worry about doing all the right things because you want the very best for your bundle of joy!

Well let me tell you, hair should be the least of your concerns with your newborn. Yes, you should wash and care for your babies hair to avoid cradle cap etc, but you shouldn't be overwhelming yourself with too much concern over your babies hair.

Why? because your baby is changing and growing so fast, I think you should be enjoying those moments. The first smile, the first time they say mommy or daddy, you know all of those milestones that they have in the first year of life.

Brown Girl with Mom on her Birthday!

Your babies hair is going to change just like everything else during the first few years. You don't yet know the hair type of your baby because the "real" hair isn't there yet. Yes, it may fall out, yes it's common for babies to get bald spots in the back where they lay on it. Don't worry about that, it will grow back. I promise! :)

If you are looking for a good hair product line to use on your newborn, I recommend Cara B Naturally because it's all natural, tear free, and made for kids of all ethnicity's. I reviewed it here.

Trust me, when your baby quickly becomes a toddler, that's when you should start looking more in dept into hair stuff. Until then, enjoy your baby!! They don't stay that way long! Take it from a Mom of 4, That's what I did!

Halloween & Party Hair

This a very easy way to add color to the hair without using chemicals or items that have to be washed out of the hair. You can use ribbon, but it's more expensive.

Items Needed:

Yarn(soft) or Ribbon & Scissors

This is perfect for parties, halloween, and sporting events!!

How To Do It

  1. Prepare the yarn by cutting pieces twice the length of the hair.
  2. Add it to the hair by putting the midpoint of the yarn close to the root of the hair and tie a knot (see video).
  3. Style & Go
  4. To remove it, if you tied a knot, cut it out being very careful not to cut the hair. If you made one single tie, gently pull them out.

KEEP GOING......

Do you ever have those days where you just don't feel like it? That's how I feel today....days like this come and go. I don't have them often but when I do, I just don't want to do NOTHING!

But in the mist of it all, I keep hearing in my spirit, KEEP GOING!!
Even when you can't concentrate, KEEP GOING!
Even when you don't feel appreciated, KEEP GOING!
Even when it seems like nobody cares, KEEP GOING!
Even when you don't know how you're going to pay your bills, KEEP GOING!
Even when you just got the worst news you could get, KEEP GOING!

I might just be writing this post for my self, but the more I type it the better I feel! I just want you to be encouraged, if you don't get a hug, a smile, a card, a thank you just remember that GOD cares and HE loves you BEST. As long as you have breath in your body, KEEP GOING because something good will always work out in your favor.....**drops the mic** now get back to work. We all have things to do.......KEEP GOING!!!!

The written version of this video is HERE!

Natural Hair Dry Scalp Treatment

Remember a few weeks ago I shared with you about my daughters hair changing? You can read about it HERE. My Sis Thalia shared with me a easy solution to our dry scalp/hair problem.

I never would have thought about using grease. Why? Because my hair hates grease. A BIG mistake on my part. I let my hair issues carry over to my daughter's hair issues. What my hair hates is exactly what her hair needs and loves! #LessonLearned

Thalia told me exactly what to do. Get some Blue Magic Grease or Sulfer 8 Medicated, Grapeseed oil or any carrier oil of your choice, and some peppermint essential oil or you can get real peppermint flakes from the seasoning section in the grocery store, mix them together and oil her scalp and ends.

Let me tell you when I applied this to her scalp it SMILED (shined) at me and said THANK YOU!! My daughter even said oohhh this feels so good! I was very happy that it was the answer, but at the same time I was kicking myself for allowing my hair NO's to get in her way. That's another post for another day.

I grease her scalp every other day and let me tell you, I am so thankful that Thalia gave me the answer to our dry scalp issues.

Do you use grease? What's your favorite grease to use?

You can watch the video of me making the mixture and oiling her scalp HERE!

A few quick tips to remember:

*Prepare your child mentally for the process. I gave my daughter a weeks notice so that she could be mentally ready.
*Start with a clean head of hair
*Have plenty of snacks on hand
*Have all of your child's favorite movies available
*Make sure you have a comfortable seat and seating area
* You may have to break the style up into a 2 or 3 day event if you are doing it yourself. Be flexible.

What things do you do to make a long hairstyle day go smoothly?

Weekend Box Braids

Brown Girls Hair

As I stated in our October Hair Goals, I had a close family friend name Thalia ,that I refer to as my sister, to put box braids in my Brown Girls Hair. She did them on this past Friday night. It took about 6 hours including a few 10 minute breaks. I got the part inspiration from Tweeny Hair Blog. She's not blogging anymore : (.....I miss her!

I am so thankful to Thalia for doing these for me.....I will be having her braid my daughters hair all of the time now. :)! She has given me some great tips on how to keep Brown Girls Hair in tip top shape. I will be sharing all of them with you.

I plan to keep her hair in these box braids for at least 3 weeks, more if possible. I am going to do a style series on her box braids that you can watch on our channel as well as here. I am so excited because I have come up with some very unique ideas along with some styles that were inspired by some of my favorite youtube natural hair guru's.

I would have posted this on last Friday or Saturday, but I wasn't feeling too well and had to take a little time to nurse myself. I really ain't got time to be sick!

Anyway, stay tuned for the box braid series that will start next week and don't forget to share your Brown Girls Hair styles with us on facebook.  Please follow us on Instagram @BrownGirlsHair and Use #BrownGirlsHair and we will feature your pictures on there and here ---------->>>>> in the sidebar!! Look at all of the cute Brown Girls Hair rocking our instagram page!!

How To Do A Fishtail Braid

Brown Girls Hair

Fishtail Braid Instructions

Step 1
Separate hair into 2 equal sections.

Step 2
Take hair from the outside of section one and cross it over to section 2.

Step 3
Take hair from the outside of section 2 and cross it over to section one.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your fishtail is complete.

Tips:
To achieve the loose look, when you cross the hair over, keep some slack in it. The more slack you have the looser it will be. The less slack the tighter the fishtail will look. We made ours tight in this video.

This is way easier than what the finished product looks like! right? Let's do it! Share your fishtails on our facebook page. To share on instagram use #BrownGirlsHair!

October Hair Goals

Today is the 1st of October and I've decided to kick off the month with a few hair goals for the month! I washed Brown Girls Hair on last Saturday, September 28, 2013 with As I Am products. Review coming soon!

My #1 goal for her hair this month is NO manipulation (combing). I am going to achieve this by getting her hair braided on this Friday, October 4, 2013. I'm going to have a very close family friend to put her hair in box braids for me. So get ready for a video series on different ways to style box braids!

My #2 goal for her hair is to focus on keeping her braids moisturized. I plan to use African Pride's braid spray. It will be my first time using this product so I do plan to do a review of it when her box braid journey is complete.

Braid Spray

My #3rd and final goal is to keep her braids in cute unique styles. This will be the most challenging task of this month, but I know I can do this!! We'll keep you posted on the styles with a video series of them.

Do you set monthly hair goals? What goals have you set for October? Don't be shy. Please share.
