Back to School Hairdo!

Hi Girls,

Well summer break has come to an end for my little Brown Girl! Today was her first day back to school. Why they always start on a Friday where we live, makes no sense to me! But anyway, since she has been in braids for the past 3 weeks, we washed her hair and she requested a simple bun for the first day of school.

I was happy to hear that because her hair needed a break from the braids, I didn't have to come up with a style, and it was super easy to do!

Teach Your Daughter to Care for Her Natural Hair *3 Tips*

Every little girl loves to play in Mommy's clothes, shoes, and jewelry. She loves to watch Mom put on her make up and comb her hair. She's looking at you dreaming of the day when she will be able to do it too!

We all know that our children learn best by watching what we do, not what we say. The first step to teaching your daughter how to care for her hair is to establish good hair habits with your hair first. She's always watching you, even when you aren't paying attention.

1. Start early teaching her what to do at bath and bed time.

I started teaching my daughter to wear a shower cap at bath time at the age of 4. This is a great age because you don't have to worry too much about her putting it in her mouth and chocking on it. You still have to keep an eye on her because it is plastic, and she is in a tub of water. Parental supervision is always needed when plastic and water is involved.

Once she gets out of the tub, switch from the shower cap immediately to the satin bonnet. After she does it religiously, it will become automatic!

Just like you create a routine for your hair, create one for your daughter too. Not just the one that you do on her hair, but create a simple one for her to do as well.

2. As early as 5 or 6, you can start teaching her to moisturize her hair depending on the thickness and/length of her hair. A child with long and thick hair may have more of a challenge with this task. So you may need to wait until your child becomes a little older and more patient. Always start by keeping the process easy and fun! If she doesn't think it's a fun tasks to do, wait until she does!

You can start with a simple method like putting her hair in 4 sections, then show her how to put the moisturizer in the palm of her hand, rub it in her hands, then apply it to her hair from root to end one section at a time.

Give her one very small portion of a section to start with. As she grows more comfortable over time, add more to her section. Keep increasing her portion (as time goes). For example this week she does one small section and next week add a little more to her section etc.

3. Let her help wash and detangle her hair on wash day. All kids love to play in bubbles! On wash day, you can give her a small section of her hair (in the front so that she can see in the mirror) to help wash and detangle. This is a great way to teach her the basics of how to do it. As she grows older, you can add more hair for her to do. Eventually, she'll be able to do her whole head!

The timeline of when you start to teach your daughter is at your discretion because you know your child better than anyone else. Just know that you are always teaching her by what you do, so make your hair habits good ones and she will follow!

Curlformers Review + Giveaway

I think we all know what curlformers are unless you have been living under a rock. Curlformers are a styling tool that offers an easy and fun way to create gorgeous curls without damaging the hair because heat is not required other than to dry the hair if you choose. Curlformers came about in 2008 when Hair Flair Ltd. in conjunction with Sally Beauty Supply launched this cool hair styling accessory.

The video below demonstrates how to use the curlformers and softhood as well as shows the results of my daughter and I using the curlformers on our natural hair.

Tips for using curlformers:

1. For natural girls, after you wash/condition etc. use Lotta Body Setting lotion mixed with water. The amount of water depends on how hard you want your curls to be. The more water you use, the softer the curls will be. This will help your curls hold and last longer OR use As I Am Twist Defining Cream. It produces awesome results. You can see me use it on my daughters hair here.

2. Load both of the rods first, then do 2 at a time. It will make the process go much faster.

3. If your curlformer doesn't curl properly, Don't take the hair out to start over. Run your thumb down the middle of it and release it. It will curl perfectly into place. You can watch our quick how to video here.

4. Keep a spray bottle handy. Curlformers apply smoothly to damp hair.

5. I found that with our thick natural hair, the softhood took a very long time to dry the hair. I suggest the softhood for fine/thin hair.

Flexi Rod Set on Natural Girl

Brown Girls Hair

This is the hair style that I put her hair in after taking down her box braids. I took them out over a period of 3 days (weekend). I started taking them down on Friday night for about 2 hours. I started in the rear and worked my way to the top.  Then on Saturday night I did about 3 hours and Sunday it took an additional 2 hours or so. Why it took longer for me to take them out than it took for my good friend to put them in is beyond me! LOL! 

On Sunday after 2 hours of taking braids down, I washed, deep conditioned, finger detangled (while the conditioner was in) and wide tooth comb detangled (after conditioner was rinsed out). Then I did a Flexi Rod Set on Brown Girls Hair. I didn't show the results in the video because it got really late and her hair still wasn't dry so she ended up sleeping with some of the rods in the back of her head : (! She said she slept good. I made sure her sides were dry before bed because I know that she sleeps on her sides and not on her back. 

This style lasted for 2 weeks...well she's still wearing it this week. I just keep it moisturized and put it in one or 2 pony tails.

I decided to add water to the lotta body because I wanted her hair to have hold, but still be soft and not hard. That made it easy for me to brush (not comb) her hair into the ponytails.

Halloween & Party Hair

This a very easy way to add color to the hair without using chemicals or items that have to be washed out of the hair. You can use ribbon, but it's more expensive. 

Items Needed: 

Yarn(soft) or Ribbon & Scissors

This is perfect for parties, halloween, and sporting events!! 

How To Do It

1. Prepare the yarn by cutting pieces twice the length of the hair. 
2. Add it to the hair by putting the midpoint of the yarn close to the root of the hair and tie a knot (see video).  
3. Style & Go
4. To remove it, if you tied a knot, cut it out being very careful not to cut the hair. If you made one single tie, gently pull them out.

Breast Cancer Awareness Hairstyle

I just noticed something. This would be a cute breast cancer awareness hairstyle. Just add some pink ribbon to the cornrows and whoa la.....there you have it! I even changed the name of the hairstyle on the tutorial video below.

Getting Box Braids on Natural Girl {The Process}

A few quick tips to remember:

*Prepare your child mentally for the process. I gave my daughter a weeks notice so that she could be mentally ready.
*Start with a clean head of hair
*Have plenty of snacks on hand

*Have all of your child's favorite movies available

*Make sure you have a comfortable seat and seating area

* You may have to break the style up into a 2 or 3 day event if you are doing it yourself. Be flexible.

Weekend Box Braids

As I stated in our October Hair Goals, I had a close family friend name Thalia ,that I refer to as my sister, to put box braids in my Brown Girls Hair. She did them on this past Friday night. It took about 6 hours including a few 10 minute breaks. I got the part inspiration from Tweeny Hair Blog. She's not blogging anymore : (.....I miss her!

I am so thankful to Thalia for doing these for me.....I will be having her braid my daughters hair all of the time now. :)! She has given me some great tips on how to keep Brown Girls Hair in tip top shape. I will be sharing all of them with you.

I plan to keep her hair in these box braids for at least 3 weeks, more if possible. I am going to do a style series on her box braids that you can watch on our channel as well as here. I am so excited because I have come up with some very unique ideas along with some styles that were inspired by some of my favorite youtube natural hair guru's.

I would have posted this on last Friday or Saturday, but I wasn't feeling too well and had to take a little time to nurse myself. I really ain't got time to be sick!

How To Do A Fishtail Braid

Fishtail Braid Instructions

Step 1

Separate hair into 2 equal sections.

Step 2

Take hair from the outside of section one and cross it over to section 2.

Step 3

Take hair from the outside of section 2 and cross it over to section one.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your fishtail is complete.

Tips:

To achieve the loose look, when you cross the hair over, keep some slack in it. The more slack you have the looser it will be. The less slack the tighter the fishtail will look. We made ours tight in this video.

October Hair Goals

Today is the 1st of October and I've decided to kick off the month with a few hair goals for the month! I washed Brown Girls Hair on last Saturday, September 28, 2013 with As I Am products. Review coming soon!

My #1 goal for her hair this month is NO manipulation (combing). I am going to achieve this by getting her hair braided on this Friday, October 4, 2013. I'm going to have a very close family friend to put her hair in box braids for me. So get ready for a video series on different ways to style box braids!

My #2 goal for her hair is to focus on keeping her braids moisturized. I plan to use African Pride's braid spray. It will be my first time using this product so I do plan to do a review of it when her box braid journey is complete.

My #3rd and final goal is to keep her braids in cute unique styles. This will be the most challenging task of this month, but I know I can do this!! We'll keep you posted on the styles with a video series of them.

Perfect Hairstyle for Tweens (ages 8-12)

There're so many ways you can mix up this hairstyle to change it up and make it fun every time you do it. The next time that I do it, I'm going to braid the back to the side to go into the pontyail! This is one that you can have a lot of fun with!

Another thing that I like about this hairstyle is that it's great for tweens (ages 8-12) and teens. It's perfect for the little girl (like mine), that's in that transitioning stage from being a little girl to a  big girl, but not quite a teenager.

I hope you enjoy doing it and that your little one wears it well!!
